Hunter Copeland,  R.D., L.D.

Hunter CopelandPosition:  Dietitian

Employment: 2003- present. Hunter has been with the Bariatric Wellness Institute for two years now, but has over 5 years experience seeing Bariatric Patients.

What I enjoy most about my job: It is great getting to see people's health problems vanish as they lose weight and start feeling more like exercising and becoming more active.

Schools attended: UAB, Alabama A&M, Nutrition Internship- Oakwood College, Huntsville High.

Family: Wife (Susan), 2 daughters (Tinsley-5, Julia-2), 1 dog (Kramer).

Message to patients:  Make sure that weight loss surgery is the right choice for YOU!  Make sure you will be able to do the things that will help you get the most out of this experience.  The surgery is only a small piece of the puzzle!  To be successful, it is still important to eat a balanced diet and to exercise regularly.

Kristi Gibbons

Kristi GibbonsPosition:  Bariatric Counselor

Employment:  2002- present

What I got most out of my Bariatric Surgery? I had Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery in June of 2001.  At the time I weighed over 300 pounds and had a BMI of 49.7.  In the 3 years since, I have lost about 180 pounds, have a BMI in the "normal" range, have a normal blood sugar level and blood pressure, and have even started running...my goal is to run in the Cotton Row Run in 2005.  People ask me all the time if I would do it over again, the surgery and all. I can honestly say that I would do it once a year for the rest of my life.  My life began in earnest when I lost that person I had been carrying around
and found myself hiding beneath the fat.

What I enjoy most about my job:  Seeing the changes, both physical and emotional in our patients after surgery.

Schools attended:  UAH, Butler High (Class of '80...Go Rebels!)

Family:  I have 3 children: Amanda-20, Whitney-18, Will-16.  My baby is my little weiner dog Addie.  My kids insist that I love the dog more than I love them to which I calmly reply, "Yes, I do."

Message to Patients:  Gastric bypass surgery is a major, life altering decision...not something that you should jump into without doing a lot of thinking and researching.  As for me, it was the best thing that i ever did for myself, and I would willingly do it once a year for the rest of my life.  To feel this good and know that I will now live to see my grandchildren is a true blessing.  This surgery not only saved my life, it gave me back a life.  Three years post-op and 180 pounds lighter, I am happier now than I remember being in years.

Natalie Temple, L.D.

Natalie TemplePosition:  Dietitian

Employment:  2004- present

What I enjoy most about my job:  I love motivating people and helping them reach and achieve their weight loss goals.  It is so rewarding to see the healthy changes the patients make after surgery.  The excitement on their faces when they lose weight is priceless.

Schools Attended:  Austin High School- Decatur, AL; Auburn University- Auburn, Al,       Dietetic Internship-Oakwood College

Message to Patients:  Surgery is not the cure-all or quick-fix for obesity.  This is not another fad-diet.  This is a lifestyle change.. For a LIFETIME!  This surgery will only assist you on your weight loss journey.  The surgery cannot change your behaviors.  It cannot change your habits.  It cannot provide you with motivation.  THAT  part is up to you.
